Watch Youth Lagoon Play With a Gold-Masked Man in New "Highway Patrol Stun Gun" Video

New MusicWeston PaganoComment

Youth Lagoon has previously released "The Knower" from forthcoming record Savage Hills Ballroom, and now the second single "Highway Patrol Stun Gun" is here with a new music video directed by Parisian filmmaker Kendy Ty.

The video shows Trevor Powers and a gold-masked accomplice with whom he is seen bowling, going out to eat, and generally gallivanting around New York City, while the track itself layers Powers' mousey vocals and melodic keys over dark, driving synth pulses.

Powers explained the concept via Fader, saying,

[It’s] this idea of having this extension of yourself. We go down these life paths and we feel like we’re always alone, but we have those different aspects of our personality that are essentially grounding us; we’re not quite alone, because we have our spirit. It was that idea, combined with the idea of losing someone and having them still be alive throughout your day to day—because I think that’s a very real thing. Anyone who’s experienced any sort of loss, you know you go out on a windy day you feel the wind on your skin and you feel like they’re still there.

Watch the video below.

Watch Gardens & Villa's Bizarre "Fixations" Music Video

Music News, New MusicWeston PaganoComment

Gardens & Villa are back already, following 2014's spectacular record Dunes with two new singles for the forthcoming album Music For Dogs which is due out August 21st via Secretly Canadian.

One of the tracks, "Fixations" comes with a bizarre music video that's a cross between the Warhol-esque psychedelic party scene in Midnight Cowboy and MGMT's "Flash Delirium," featuring costumes, vomit, and a particularly aggressive drone. "Fixations," and the other new song "Everybody" to a lesser extent, show Gardens & Villa seem to be moving away from the more hard-hitting and dramatic sounds of their last LP and subsequent Televisor EP for a more light and playful vibe.

Check out both singles, the video, Music For Dogs cover art, and tour dates below.

Peter Bjorn and John Debut Two New Songs, Hint at New Album on NPR's World Cafe

New Music, Music NewsWeston PaganoComment

Much-beloved Swedish indie trio Peter Bjorn and John have recorded a session for NPR's World Cafe as part of the radio program's Sense of Place series' Stockholm edition.

The episode, which you can stream in it's entirety below, features two brand new track titled "Breaking Point" and "Do Si Do," the latter of which you can watch being performed in the video below.

In the broadcast Peter Bjorn and John mention they have "scrapped" previous developments of a new album, but coyly claim to have "more than five" and "less than 100" tracks ready for a future release, which would be their first (barring the one-off "High Up (Take Me To The Top") since 2011's Gimme Some.

UPDATE: The video for "Do Si Do" has been taken down. Hopefully it is only temporary.

David Gilmour Releases Title-Track from and Details Forthcoming Solo LP 'Rattle That Lock,' Announces Tour

Music News, New MusicWeston PaganoComment

Former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has released the title-track from his forthcoming solo LP Rattle That Lock which is due out September 18 via Columbia Records.

The song itself begins with four notes from the intercom system in French SNCF railway stations, curiously enough, which Gilmour captured on his phone while at the Aix-en-Provence station. Combined with a roving bass groove, a backing choir, and a quintessentially Gilmour guitar solo, "Rattle That Lock" is a sign of good things to come.

The record features Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera and Jools Hollands, and contains lyrics primarily written by Gilmour's wife, novelist Polly Samson (who also worked with him on his preceding LP, 2006's #1 platinum album On An Island) that are inspired by John Milton's Paradise Lost.

In addition to the usual formats, Rattle That Lock will be available in a deluxe box edition, which includes a staggering four Barn Jam films, four non-album audio tracks, four documentaries, two promo clips, two hardback books, a double-sided poster, a postcard in a dedicated envelope, and a David Gilmour plectrum (which is the fancy word English rock legends use for guitar picks).

Wilco Just Surprise Released a Free New Album Called 'Star Wars'

Music News, New MusicWeston PaganoComment

No, this actually isn't a joke.

Wilco, the band, have just released an album named after Star Wars, the movie series. They did it today, with no notice, and are giving it away for free, here, for a "limited time." Definitely no questions there, right?

"Why release an album this way and why make it free? Well, the biggest reason, and I'm not sure we even need any others, is that it felt like it would be fun. What's more fun than a surprise?” Jeff Tweedy said in a Facebook post.

The surprise LP consists of 11 original tracks and makes you wonder if Wilco aren't from Chicago after all, but rather a galaxy far, far away. Marina Towers always did remind me a little of Cloud City.

Youth Lagoon Releases New Single "The Knower," Details Forthcoming Album 'Savage Hills Ballroom'

Music News, New MusicWeston PaganoComment

Trevor Powers, better known as Youth Lagoon, recently released a 7" for free through select record stores called "The Knower." This record contained a handwritten URL that led fans to this site that announced a forthcoming LP titled Savage Hills Ballroom.

That album now has a release date, September 25 via Fat Possum Records, and that single has now been put online for your listening pleasure. You can check it out, along with the tracklist and current tour dates, below.

On new track "The Knower" Powers continues to oscillate within his peculiar mixture of mousey and bold as he has in prior releases, but now branches out beyond his typical introspection, crooning more outward lyrics including "Oh, everybody wants to think that they're good at heart / When they're full of hate."

Musically, Powers has added some brass instrumentation and seems to have moved away from the lower-fi tendencies that so characterized his psychedelic tunes in the past. According to NPR, he relocated to Bristol where he lived and worked with producer and engineer Ali Chant (Perfume Genius), taking "a more focused turn toward dark, bittersweet electronic pop."
